There is never really an ideal time to start thinking about or working on topics of Emergency Preparedness. Just like there is never really an ideal time for an emergency or a disaster to take place.
We've heard it over and over to the point where it can sometimes become overwhelming: Get your 72 hour kits ready, food storage for beginners, top 10 things you need for emergency preparedness, and so on and so forth. More than likely there is a lot of good information, but how much of it pertains to us and our specific area?
The other issue we face is that we live in an area that is unlike most of the rest of Weber county.
Trying to determine where our emergency preparedness efforts can best be placed will largely depend on what local disasters are possible in our own area. Where can you find this information? One place is the Weber County Hazzard mitigation plan although it is a bit outdated, it still contains a lot of good information. FEMA has a website that lists ongoing and past disasters for Utah region 8. Be ready Utah also has a list of possible disasters for Utah.
Local disasters for our area include: Earthquakes, Floods, High winds, Severe thunderstorms, Severe winter storms, infestations, and Heat waves. This blog will continue in a series and break down how to prepare for all of these different emergencies.
